Official Time: 1:33:09
Place: 3rd in 16-19 year division
Official Results: https://www.runraceresults.com/Secure/RaceResults.cfm?ID=RCHV2011

I was happy that my family was able to accompany me and watch me run in this half-marathon. My goal for this race was to put together a run that I would remember. Sure enough, I did come out with a big PR that I was happy with. Looking back at this race, I’m glad to say that this year’s cross country season was a success, capped off with a race that I am proud of.

All I can say is that I hope my uncle is proud of me. I’ll run all my races for him from now on.

Date: Nov 12, 2011
Location: Crystal Springs
My time: 17:04 (PR)
Results: http://www.dyestatcal.com/ATHLETICS/XC/2011/ccsres.htm

Today was a little uneventful. My goal was to shoot for 16:50, but I wasn’t able to reach that goal. However, I did manage a small PR. Now that season is over, I’ll go back to the drawing board and rethink plans for my track preseason.

Today’s race was okay, but I was about 15 seconds off my PR at 17:31 since I had ran a massive 26.2 miles the previous Saturday. Both our teams managed to qualify to CCS, so we’ll all be back for more there…

Monterey Bay Invitational 2011

I managed a respectable 11th place finish with a 17:28 for the 3 mile varsity boys race at at Toro County Park in Salinas.  The weather was very hot and humid and likely had some bearing on the overall performance in the race. Still I am happy with my run.

Here are all the pictures my Dad took of the the Lynbrook team. Enjoy!

33rd Annual Asics Clovis Invitational 2011

I quickly turned in my math test, and ran out the door. I was going to Clovis with my friends for a big race! Words couldn’t describe how excited I was for this trip.

I was in a car with my friends Davis, Miles, Revanth, Jesse, and Tom. We were off to Fresno to have the time of our lives. The drive there was uneventful, but we stopped at Los Baños for lunch.

After some paperwork, coach Jake sent us to our rooms. We had six guys including me in a small room that had three beds. So we called up coach. He told us he’d swap with us for the executive suite. So now we had three beds and a sleeping bag. We spent most of our time just chatting about the drive and relaxing until it was time for dinner.

The pasta feed was okay. For ten bucks we had a pretty decent meal of spaghetti and salad. We all enjoyed our time together as a team. Once we had full stomachs again, we returned to the hotel.

We weren’t really doing much the night before the race. To calm the freshmen’s nerves, I took them out for a small half-mile walk. After that we watched some TV before going to sleep around 9:20.

Around 5:30ish, we all got up. We packed our bags and walked out with confidence. Breakfast was a bagel, a small egg’s benedict, a banana and some milk.  However, we made sure that we kept our stomachs light for the big race.

Now, the race. This is what we came for. The invitational was huge; there were maybe 5,000 people there. Our varsity girls toed the start line first. Then our senior boys. Then finally, it was our turn.

The weather was perfect, not too hot, but just warm with no wind. We lined up and did our cheer. We were pumped and ready for this race. The gun went off, and I saw my teammates tag behind me. Tom Sanders kept with me for the first mile and some. Coach told me that “no matter what, I’d be seeing a fast time on the first mile.” And he was right – the first mile came, 5:20. We headed up a small hill for the second mile. I was behind maybe twelve guys at this point.

The second mile made me feel more at home. There were hills like the ones at Crystal Springs and Toro Park.  About halfway through the race, we went up what they called “Killer Hill.” For me, it didn’t feel too killer – I powered up the hills, passing more guys along the way. Finally, with a mile to go, the course took a straight cut back the way where we came from. There was a large gauntlet. I could see my fellow Lynbrook teammates cheering me on. I passed the leader with about one mile to go. The clock read 11:40.

The last mile was fairly uneventful. I could hear footsteps behind me, but I wasn’t sure how far ahead I was. With about 400m to go, I was back on the asphalt. Fellow seniors Andrew and Ian were there, screaming my name. I pushed and pushed harder. The clock at the finish line had malfunctioned, reading 15:43. My mind went blank as I crossed the white line. A volunteer handed me my medal and a champions’ backpack. I saw my coach’s beaming face and couldn’t help but grin. And to top it off, our team finished fairly well also – finishing sixth in a deep field of 25 schools.

I was pretty happy the rest of the day too, with a time of 17:11, and a surprising first place finish in a deep field of 178 runners. I guess I’ll say that sleeping early really helped.  In the big picture, though, we still had half of the season left, with more of the tougher races ahead. On Monday, it would be back to the grind again at practice…

Steve Jobs

I know there was a shooting today in Cupertino, resulting in deaths of many loved ones. However, none was sadder than that of Steve Jobs’.

We’re not just going to forget this man within a week. He is special. It isn’t everyday where an activist of this caliber loses his life fighting the most unforgiving type of cancer. This man was impeached from his own company, yet rejoined later and increased the stock by 6250%. We’re not going to see a person like this for a while. Steve Jobs’ death was akin to that of DaVinci’s; an unimaginable trove of innovation, ideas, and memories was lost today.

For all this man has done, the least we can do is to pay compensation in means of respect. Cupertino should name October 5th Steve Jobs Day, because Cupertino is Apple. We should have a moment of silence in school tomorrow, across the nation, to commemorate and mediate on everything that he has contributed to mankind.

As someone said, there were three apples that changed the world:

  • The first seduced Eve,
  • The second helped Newton discover gravity,
  • and the third was bitten by Steve Jobs and handed down to the people.

Please pay your respects to this lucid thinker and phenomenal innovator by writing an obituary: http://www.apple.com/stevejobs/

Stanford XC Invitational 2011

Today was my first big invitational with the Lynbrook Varsity team, and I was definitely feeling a knot of anxiety in my stomach. My parents could tell I was nervous because I had lost my sense of order, almost forgetting to bring my water bottle and bag of nuts.

Prior to this race, I wanted to run a 17:35 5K time on the Stanford Golf Course, since I had run a 17:46 at Toro Park’s hilly three mile course. In preparation for this race, I trained rigorously with my friends David, Andy, and Howard. Over the course of five weekdays, we had amassed more than thirty-six miles of distance running and intervals.

Today’s race was far different from what I have usually run in the past, mainly because it was my first race with Lynbrook’s Varsity team. Our team included:

  • Andrew Kuo, a dedicated senior,
  • Jason Jin, a wizened senior,
  • Ian Wilson, a senior with a blistering kick,
  • So Masuoka, a consistent junior,
  • Anthony Huang, a passionate junior,
  • Tom Sanders, a promising freshman athlete, and
  • Me, the lone sophomore.

As I did my drills and warm-ups with Tom Sanders, however, the anxiety seemed to dry off me like sweat during a long run.

Since the race was large and was comprised of at least forty teams, the start was definitely a huge scramble to find one’s race pace. To combat this phenomenon, I assigned myself a small goal. In the developing stages of the race, I tried to stick with Anthony and Tom throughout the race. Still, even after the three-kilometer mark, it was difficult for us three to keep a suitable pace within a dense crowd.

As I turned for the last eight hundred meters, I could see another red-and-blue singlet. I thought it to be that of So’s, a junior who is considerably faster than me. As I saw the clock, which read 16:45, I was pleasantly surprised. I hadn’t expected to push the pace that fast! I could hear the ringing shouts of my mom, dad, brother and my Stanford cousin, who had made the trip just to watch me run. Mustering all the energy I had left in my tank, I passed So with about fifty to go. However, he reclaimed his position in front of me just before the finish, completing the course two seconds faster than me.

Naturally, I was happy with my time of 17:05 since it was much better than I had anticipated. However, my family noted that my final sprint, or “kick” was lacking. A few runners had passed me in the last fifty meters. Nevertheless, I took this within my stride, noting that there would always be someone better than me. In the future, in order to beat the few runners that passed me in this race, I’ll have to work on how much I really want to beat them in the next race. I’ll most definitely put more effort into quicker intervals and strides the next time around.

As an afterthought to today’s race, I’d really like to thank my family and cousin Sunil for taking the time off to support and cheer me on today. It definitely meant a lot to me. I would also like to thank my coach Jake and the varsity for being supportive and giving me the opportunity to run in this prestigious invitational today.

Be sure to check out the movie that my dad made of my race today in the link up top!
